FAQ

u

I am not flexible - can I do Yoga?

Yes, definitely! Everyone can practice Yoga. You really don’t have to be able to touch your toes! I have taught people from the age of 4 to 84! Yoga really is for everybody, whatever your body shape, age, flexibility.

u

What type of Yoga do you teach?

I don’t label my ‘style’ of Yoga to one strict ‘discipline’. I have been practicing Yoga for over 25 years, and have been influenced by many teachings. I bring elements of different traditions into my teaching, although I am most influenced by Hatha Yoga.

I teach beginners, general, dynamic and restorative classes, and try to adapt according to the needs of the group.

I offer a safe and thoughtful practice, blending asana (postures), functional movements, strength building, breath work, meditation and relaxation.

u

What do I wear?

Wear loose and comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. We practice Yoga barefoot.
You don’t have to wear leggings! Jogging bottoms or shorts are also fine.

What do I need to bring?

The studio is fully equipped with everything you will need. However you might like to use your own Yoga equipment/mat, bring a blanket (and warm clothing for relaxation) and an eye pillow. You can bring some water if you need to sip it in class.

What are the benefits of Yoga?

A Yoga practice has positive effects on all of the bodily systems and the benefits of Yoga vary from person to person, butit isn’t just about being flexible. The practice of Yoga asana (postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises) benefits the circulatory, digestive, endocrine, immune, lymphatic, muscular, skeletal, nervous, respiratory, reproductive and urinary systems. Try Yoga for yourself and experience the positive benefits for body, mind and soul.

I am worried other people will be better than me.

Yoga is non-competitive. It’s a time to turn your awareness inwards and not care about what others in the room may be doing. No one will be watching you.

Not all postures are suitable for all bodies – so modications will be offered. You will be encouraged to listen to your body and observe your own boundaries. Yoga is all about connecting the mind, mind and breath; a practice of self-discovery rather than comparison. As we dont know how someone else feels – we cannot be better than someone else!

u

Is Yoga a religion?

Yoga is not a religion, it is a philosophy that began in India over 5000 years ago. You do not have to be religious or surrender your own religious beliefs to practice Yoga.
It is inclusive of everyone.
u

Do I need to fill out a medical form?

Yes, before your first class with me you will need to complete a medical history form and a disclaimer. This is so I am aware of any issues that may affect your practice. However, if you have a health condition you should seek advice from your GP before coming to class.
u

What happens in class?

Classes are 90 minutes long and usually start by either lying down or being seated – quietening the mind and finding a connection between the breath and the body. Working through a sequence of asana (Yoga postures) cultivating a continued breath led movement, we progress through a variety of kneeling, standing, lying, inversions, back bends and seated postures. The class always ends with savasana (relaxation).
u

What is a block of classes and can I attend any class?

When you sign up for a block of classes, you are securing your mat space for a specific class each week (i.e. every Monday evening during that block) during a pre set time period. Drop-in classes must be pre booked as spaces are not guaranteed.
Please see my terms and conditions for further information on missed classes, catch-ups, and cancellations.
